A number of prison guards came to respect Bonhoeffer, smuggling out papers, essays and poems which made their way to family and friends. Wherever he was imprisoned, Bonhoeffer served his fellow prisoners with God’s word, leading secret services. On April 5 th 1943, he was arrested for his part in the resistance movement and an assassination plot against Hitler.
